Subway

Steak & Cheese Salad | Net Carbs ~3g

Order: Steak and Cheese Salad Extra Bacon with Southwest Sauce (opt for Jack cheese over cheddar)

Ok, this particular order may not be to everyone’s taste, bu here’s a very helpful low carb tip… Subway will make ANY of its subs as a salad upon request!  Indeed, you could have a steak and cheese salad if the notion strikes you!

The only catch is you need to be cautious of the dressings and sauces you ask for.  The two condiments to stay well away from are the Fat Free Honey Mustard and the Fat Free Sweet Onion, containing 7g and 9g of carbs respectively per 6″ sub (or salad equivalent).

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the flatbreads are a better alternative to the bread for a low carb lifestyle.  In fact, the flatbread has exactly the same number of carbs as the 6″ white (Italian) bread at 27g! And certainly don’t assume that you’ll do better by opting for whole wheat bread.  At 40g of carbs per 6″ sub, it’s considerably worse!

I really enjoy the Chipotle Southwest Sauce sauce, and at 2g of carbs per meal I can live with that, though mayo (NOT light mayo!) has none at all.
